Assignment 10- Portraiture

This project begins our portraiture unit. The goal of this assignment is to incorporate everything you have learned into these photos. Considering composition and lighting is vital for a successful project.

I would like you to turn in four photos you have taken of another person. Make sure that they are dynamic and unique. Have fun! You have two weeks to work on this assignment. It is due November 19th.

Assignment 9- Alphabet Photography

 This project steers you in a new direction. The goal is to find letters formed by nature, architecture, and other objects. Once you find letters, you must form a word with them.

Your assignment is to find a scripture that has been significant in your life. For example, mine is Isaiah 26:3.

" You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You."

Once you have found this scripture, I want you to pick a word that represents the feelings evoked in this scripture. The word can be found with in the verse, or it can be an outside word representing the verse. The word that I would choose for this verse would either be peace or trust.

Your assignment based on the keyword is to find photographs revealing specific letters. Your final project will be a photoshop project incorporating all of the letters and the verse. More details will be explained in class.

Assignment 9- IMA Composition Photos

In honor of our field trip to the IMA, I would like you to post your three favorite photos from the trip. Please make sure that they are compositionally strong, and that you include at least 1 artist statement.

Assignment 8- Backlighting

This is a late post. Last Friday, two backlighting photos and one artist statement was due. Backlighting is a technique where a photographer utilitzes the light from behind their subject.

Assignment 7- Action Photography (Part 2)

This week's project is nearly the same as last weeks. The focus is high shutter speed used to capture stopped action. Since you have had a week to work on this already, this week I want you to challenge yourself creatively and compositionally. Make this project better than your previous action shots.

This project is due October 8th. You must have two photographs and one artist statement.

Assignment 6-Action Photography

         After a week off to study art history, photography class is back to its regular schedule. This means that this assignment is due on Friday, October 1st. Since we have completed the composition section of this course, it is time to move onto a new section of photography. This week's project is focusing on Action Photography. This can also be referred to as stop action photography and fast shutter speed photography. Even though this class is no longer specifically focusing on composition, I am expecting you to apply what you have learned about composition to your projects for the rest of the semester.

        The goal of this assignment is to crisply stop motion in a photograph.The person or object that is in motion should be clearly in focus. The key to accomplishing this is to use a high shutter speed. The recommended speed for an action photo is 1/250 of a second. If you don't have manual settings on your camera, I would suggest that you use a sports setting. The sports setting of your camera automatically sets your shutter at a higher speed.

       Have fun and use creativity to accomplish this project. Practice is key to accomplishing action photography.

Assignment 5- Repetition (and Variety) in Photography

A common element of composition used in photography is Repetition. This can be seen specifically in commercial photography for advertising. Sometimes photographers just repeat a specific element; other times they will add variety to their photograph for added contrast. For example, they may line up three apples and an orange.

Repetition is found every where. Take a minute and look around to discover what your eye has not seen previously.

As you are shooting your photographs for this assignment, remember to include other elements of composition that you have applied to previous projects.
